Medicare doesn't cover our teeth and gums. About 2.3 million people in Ontario don't see a dentist because they can't afford it. Their health and wellbeing suffers as a result. This costs us all as people in dental pain turn to hospital emergency rooms and lose work days.
How can our health system ensure that people in need have access to the oral health care they require to be healthy? Two recent reports tackled this issue. Hear from a panel of health and community spokespeople who will share their knowledge and ideas.

  • Dr Paul Allison, Dean of Dentistry at McGill University. Lead author of 2014 report "Improving access to oral health care for vulnerable people living in Canada" by Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
  • Dr Hazel Stewart, Director, Dental & Oral Health Services , City of Toronto. Long time advocate for health equity.
  • Mike Creek, Working for Change. Community member with lived experience of lack of access to dental.
  • Brad Sinclair, College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, to talk about their new report "Review of Oral Health Services in Ontario"
  • Steve Barnes, Policy Analyst at the Wellesley Institute. Presenting new report: "Low Wages, No Benefits."

  • Laura Hanson, Primary Health Care RN, Regent Park Community Health Centre.

Facilitated by: Armine Yalnizyan, Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives
Following the morning public event, the Ontario Oral Health Alliance (OOHA) annual symposium will take place from 12:00 - 3:30 pm. There is a fee of $30 for the afternoon event.
